2022 Ford Maverick Pickup Debuts Next Week, Hybrid Powertrain Teased

While it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Ford’s forthcoming compact pickup would take the name Maverick, it turns out the Blue Oval never actually confirmed that tidbit … until now. It’s official: The 2022 Ford Maverick is coming on June 8, 2021. The company also announced an ad campaign starring Gabrielle Union.

Arguably the most tangible and tantalizing tidbit in Dearborn’s teaser for the Maverick comes courtesy of the truck’s tailgate badging. Look quickly at the lower left part of the tailgate around the eight-second mark of the video above and you might just notice the small “Hybrid” badge located on the pickup’s rear end. That’s right, it seems the Maverick will offer a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain right out of the gate. Given the little pickup almost certainly shares its underpinnings with the Escape and Bronco Sport, the Maverick likely cribs the 200-hp gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain from the former SUV (it may also indicate Ford’s plans to put this powertrain in the Bronco Sport, as well).

Other noteworthy aspects pulled from this teaser are the truck’s black front-fender garnish, offset rear license plate, and Ranger-like taillights. The tailgate stamping, meanwhile, looks a bit more like that of the 2020 F-150‘s than the newer 2021 model.

We’ll have full coverage of the 2022 Ford Maverick when it debuts next week (June 8), including dishing up details on its powertrain options, specs, and towing and hauling capabilities.
